REDO
This group of paintings shows the stories I tell myself and the games I play while I am watching paint dry.
So much time in the studio is spent watching paint dry.
In between watching, I interplay geometric shape and figurative form to amuse, confuse and distract myself.
I am painting on repurposed canvases that have been stored in the attic for quite some time, waiting – pre-stretched and pre-primed – for a new meaning.
I start by making reference to the inner stretcher frame on the surface, as if I were building the support. Then I draw in the compositional grid, as I did with string when the canvases were fresh. I liked using this grid method to t
ransfer and enlarge “the drawing”. Back then I did drawings on paper to capture ideas for paintings on canvas. Now I draw on experiential ephemera.
Matisse said: I do not think exactly the way I thought yesterday… I do not repudiate any of my paintings but there is not one of them that I would not redo differently if I had to redo.
